Many of the inhabitants of the communities surrounding Soloy such as 19 de abril, Nueva Generacion, Cerro Banco y Boca Remedio, are young families or students at the near by technical high school. According to local religious leaders and officials, the Panamanian government has arranged for about 400 of those who were displaced to take refuge in the high school, however this arrangement is only for the next 11 days. Those who are not staying at the school have left the area or are staying with family. Local religious groups are taking potable water from outside of David to Soloy for use in the school. The Ministry of Health is looking after basic health needs for the displaced and the nutritionists are working night and day with local women to prepare food.
We have been thinking about long term plans for the communities that need to be rebuilt and using the donated monies for this. These ideas include: safe water systems, sanitation control, pig, goat, sheep and chicken farms, community house, and anything else our donors (you) would like done with your money. please let us know!
The immediate relief issues seem to be in the hands of the Panamanian government however local leaders fear what comes after the next 9 days. Whole communities need to be rebuilt, houses re-erected and sanitation re-established.
Please Donate, every little bit can help, even $5 can have an impact that is unimaginable for us from the donating end. A couple dollars can mean the world when everything you owned has been swept away by a river.
